The Battaglia Vini sign among the vineyards
Since1958

Our story

One family, one single passion

The winery Battaglia Vini was founded in 1958 through the vision and dedication of Vincenzo Battaglia. A love for the vine and for his land that has never faded, passed from father to son.

The winery then passed to his son Carmelo and his wife Anna, who preserved its values. Today the baton is in the hands of the third generation: siblings Rossella, Antonella and Vincenzo, who blend the family tradition with modern winemaking techniques.

«Our mission is to bring true Calabrian quality to our customers' tables: products of excellence that only our land can give us.» — The Battaglia siblings

The territory

Where Aspromonte
meets the Strait

Our vineyards grow on the southernmost tip of the province of Reggio Calabria: where Capo Spartivento and the Costa dei Gelsomini dip the boot into the Ionian Sea, and the land rises swiftly towards the foothills of Aspromonte.

From this clay soil, between 200 and 500 metres, kissed by the sun and caressed by the winds of the Strait, our IGTs Pellaro, Arghillà and Palizzi are born: an unrepeatable microclimate, preserved with respect and shared with the world with pride.

The appellations

Three terroirs, one land

Our labels are born in three Typical Geographic Indications of the province of Reggio Calabria, each with its own regulations, soils and light.

Calabria
Reggio Calabria province

The detail shows the province of Reggio Calabria with the real municipal boundaries of the IGT zones (ISTAT data). Hover over the cards to highlight each appellation.

IGT Calabria

The regional appellation encompasses our three zones: every wine from Pellaro, Arghillà or Palizzi is also a wine of Calabria. When grapes come from multiple terroirs, this is the appellation that tells their story.

IGT Pellaro

0–300 m a.s.l.

The peninsula stretching between the Ionian Sea and the Strait of Messina: the extreme tip of the boot, where the sea accompanies the vines.

Zone
Entire municipality of Motta San Giovanni and part of Reggio Calabria (Bocale, Lume di Pellaro, Macellari, Occhio di Pellaro, Oliveto, Paterriti, Pellaro, San Filippo, Valanidi).
Soils

Soils
Fine-textured clay soils, rich in skeleton.
Types

Our method

From harvest to glass

Four steps, one single principle: intervene as little as possible and at the right moment. Three generations of farming wisdom, supported by modern winery techniques.

Crates of freshly harvested black grapes 01

Harvest

Harvested strictly by hand, crate by crate, to bring only intact bunches to the winery. Each vineyard has its moment: we begin with Chardonnay and end with overripe Zibibbo.

Period
Last decade of August — early October
Vineyard
Guyot and bush vine, 5,000/6,000 plants per hectare
Destemming: grapes entering the crusher 02

Vinification

Destemming and gentle pressing, then fermentation at controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. For reds, daily pumping-over and punch-downs extract colour and tannin with delicacy.

Maceration
Approximately 15 days on the skins
Rosés
Brief cold maceration and free-run must
Barriques in the ageing cellar 03

Ageing

Malolactic fermentation takes place in second-fill French oak barriques, which round without masking the fruit. More immediate wines rest in stainless steel, to preserve freshness and minerality.

Oak
6/8 months in barrique
Bottle
3 to 8 months before release
Tasting Mistero outdoors 04

In the glass

The work ends at the table. Each label has its serving temperature and its Calabrian traditional pairing: from maccarruni with wild boar ragù to petrali with figs.

Service
From 10–12°C for whites to 18–20°C for reds
At the table
A regional pairing for every wine

No wine leaves the winery before it is ready: it is the vintage and the tasting that decide the timing, not the calendar.
